Blue Bottle Coffee

From 2014-2016, studio founder Danielle Harris worked closely with Blue Bottle Coffee founder James Freeman to refine and refresh the brand. Using the brand pillars of purity, sustainability and hospitality as our guiding principles, we developed a brand system that would help Blue Bottle move from a successful Bay Area small business, to one that could scale globally.

The logo refresh was a collaborative process, combining the input of several trusted design resources. My role was taking all of the suggestions and refining the mark to what we would ultimately move forward with.

We landed on a softer treatment of the word coffee, hoping to one day reduce the mark to Blue Bottle alone.

Blue Bottle is deeply dedicated to sustainability, so much so, we were unable to give up the bag they’d been using for 10 years, as it was, and remains, the only 100% compostable bag available. The design solution aimed to elevate the simple and unfinished look of the bag, creating a face that communicated only what was necessary, reflecting the quiet nature of the brand voice and the purity of the product inside.

Blue Bottle’s new subscription program required a packaging that would travel well and hold freshness longer, thus we developed a foil bag option in off-white to differentiate it from the cafe packaging and to provide the highest quality experience for subscribers. Additionally, we developed a number of coffee tasting kits (as seen above), to expand product offerings online and in store.

As Art Director, I brought on photographer Amber Canterbury to travel to origin and capture a truly unique and romantic view of the coffee growing and sourcing process. These assets were used inside of subscription packaging as “coffee cards”, various printed collateral and online at bluebottlecoffee.com.

Oji is a Japanese-style, slow drip, cold-brewed coffee that takes up to 18 hours to make. Dense, pure and very strong, we developed a packaging that would reflect the refinement of the product and the intensity of the drink. This was only available in select NY and SF stores with Oji brewing equipment to ensure freshness.
